Take a whirlwind tour of music, culture, and design in Vienna with Mary Poppins star Annemieke von Dam. Your day will be perfect – or, as Mary Poppins says, supercalifragilisticexpialidocius.
The actress and Mary Poppins musical star Annemieke von Dam's perfect day in Vienna begins with a Kipferl (croissant) and coffee at the picturesque Heuer am Karlsplatz (4., Treitlstraße 2), where breakfast, lunch and evening cocktails go down as smooth as a spoonful of sugar.
Then it's off to the 6th and 7th districts for a taste of the Vienna Naschmarkt (6., Wienzeile), the city's one-stop-shop for all things delicious. Just a wink and a double blink away lies the Theater an der Wien (6., Linke Wienzeile 6) where Annemieke first savored the limelight and caught Vienna's attention, so we pay it a visit … and she pays her respects to its storied past and present. Whisking along, we pass the Café Sperl (6., Gumpendorfer Straße 11), a coffeehouse steeped in tradition and, as we learn, female service. Ever mindful of the most magical route from A to B – or in this case, from the 6th to the 7th district – Annemieke then leads us through the breathtakingly lovely Raimundhof. Wow! We emerge in the Mariahilferstraße, Vienna's ne-plus-ultra promenade for shop-til-you-droppers, guiltless gourmets, and conoisseurs of colourful designer boutiques such as Herr und Frau Klein (7., Kirchengasse 7) and Decoo Lifestyle (7., Stiftgasse 13).
Before we have time to empty our wallets, Annemieke ushers us via U-Bahn to conspicuous consumption's cool, eco-conscious cousin: the Stadtpark (1., Parkring). Maybe all the fresh air has gone to our heads, but we can't resist snapping our very own photo of the iconic Johann-Strauss monument. Then culture calls, so we pop by the Gartenbau Cinema (1., Parkring 12), where some of the world's premier cinema makes its silver screen debut. Vienna's sound museum, the House of Music (1., Seilerstätte 30), is within hearing distance, so we follow our ears and lose ourselves in the music and the experience – as does our host. Highly recommended!
After a brief goodbye we rendezvous backstage at the Ronacher (1., Seilerstätte 9), one of Vienna's two musical theatres. As Annemieke becomes Mary Poppins step by step, we are chim-chimeree-charmed.
