This message contrasts the pursuit of human wisdom with the “raw” simplicity of the gospel: though Proverbs calls us to grow in wisdom, Paul insists that when it comes to salvation, all boasting and complexity must fall away—“by grace ye are saved.” The preacher walks through Ephesians 2 and 1 Corinthians 1 & 15 to show that God concentrated all His wisdom in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ: Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day—sufficient and complete without our works, rituals, or added “seasoning.” Baptism is celebrated as a picture, not a pathway, to salvation. Believers are urged to simply believe, resting in union with Christ—crucified, buried, and risen with Him—freed from sin’s penalty and power now, and one day from sin’s presence, because on the cross Christ made peace with us.
