Two cultural theorists on the link between music & tech, the future of the music industry, and the commodified role of today's artist.
**THIS IS A RECORDING OF THE ZOOM EVENT THAT TOOK PLACE ON MARCH 18, 2021**
What’s happening in the music industry? Does the industry even exist anymore? How has the role of the artist changed in the last 30 years? How about since COVID? What comes after streaming? Is the artist a billboard? Who and what is music for? Is music becoming increasingly “functional” or created specifically for a purpose (workout playlists, meditation apps, TikTok, etc.), or is there still some heart left in the carefully crafted rhythms? Is Spotify the future? If not, what comes after?
Tech, Commodification, and the Future of Music is a conversation between Jean-Hugues Kabuiku and DeForrest Brown, Jr, moderated by Sofie Mikhaylova (Sonja) and presented by Ryerson University School of Professional Communications and Biblioteka Records. It will cover topics of post-COVID creation, the commodified role of the modern artist as a music-making machine, the commodification and financialization of music and the music industry itself, and offer thoughts, ideas, and possible solutions for a creative world after this.
