Extended Certificate (Level 3)

You will benefit from excellent teaching which will develop your skills and business knowledge to equip you for degree-level study, further training, an apprenticeship or a career in business.

This course will bring you into contact with local and national businesses through assignment work, educational trips and visiting speakers. We aim to equip you with research, time-management and independent learning skills as you complete the exam and coursework elements of this course.

Entry Requirements
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Maths.

What does the course involve?
We’ll support you in developing the skills and business knowledge to equip you for degree-level study, further training, an apprenticeship, or a career in business.

We aim to equip you with research, time-management, and independent learning skills as you complete the exam and coursework elements of this course.

You may be a student who prefers coursework to exams and this course has a balance of both. This is a course that enables you to learn about businesses in an applied way, using real companies to provide the context for your coursework assignments.

Unit 1 – The Business Environment (exam)
Unit 4 – Customers and Communication (coursework).
Unit 2 – Working in Business (exam)
Unit 5 – Marketing and Market Research (coursework)
Unit 8 – Introduction to Human Resource Management (coursework).

The exam units involve learning about types of business ownership, finance, and ethical issues. You will also learn about working in a business, effective communication, and payment methods. The coursework units involve investigating a different local or national business, requiring you to carry out independent and group research.

How is the course assessed?
Two exams and three internally assessed coursework units. There is a resit opportunity for the exams.

Additional Notes
Education visits and trips are organised to support the coursework elements of this course and information gathered is used directly within
unit assignments.

Further Information
You can progress to a range of higher education courses, including degree courses in Business Management, Marketing, Accountancy and Law. Many national companies are offering fantastic apprenticeship opportunities and our students have been successful in securing highly sought-after training with businesses such as Dyke Yaxley (accountancy), Capgemini (degree apprenticeship) and the Civil Service.

Business A Level

Entry Requirements
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Maths, plus grade 4 or above in Business (if taken at GCSE).

What does the course involve?
This course reflects what is happening in the world of business, both in the UK and internationally. You’ll be expected to be aware of changes in the business environment and relate your theoretical learning to real businesses in the news. This course is ideal for you if you are wanting to pursue a high-flying business career, or to complement other A Level courses. You will be well-equipped to apply for a university course in Business Management, Accountancy, Law, or International Business.

You will be expected to learn theoretical business models, use a wide range of business calculations, tackle in-depth business case studies, and write essays.

The first year provides a detailed insight into the key functions within a business. You will learn about leadership, finance, human resource management, marketing, and operations management.

The pace of learning is rapid and in the second year, you will be expected to apply your knowledge to tackle essay questions and longer case studies in preparation for the final exams. You will learn about business strategy, culture, globalisation, accounts, investment decisions, ethics, and management of change.

How is the course assessed?
100% Exam - Three final written exams (two hours each). AQA specification.

Additional Notes
The majority of our Business A Level students go on to university to study business-related degrees, including international business, management, finance and marketing. Others use business as a complementary subject to apply for courses in subjects such as law, psychology, sport, and journalism. Many national companies are now offering excellent degree apprenticeships and our business students have been successful in securing highly sought-after training with organisations such as Capgemini, Morris, Babcock International and the Civil Service.

Further Information
You will undertake additional activities including college enterprise activities such as the Tenner Challenge, employer visits e.g. Jaguar Land Rover, inspirational business speakers and relevant educational visits.
