The Battle Of Graveney Marsh - World War 2

Описание к видео The Battle Of Graveney Marsh - World War 2

The Battle Of Graveney Marsh took place on September 27th 1940.

Captain John Cantopher watched as Luftwaffe pilot Fritz Ruhlandt crashed his Junkers JU88 on the marshlands outside the small village of Graveney, Kent.

This in itself wasn't unusual. The Battle of Britain was raging and crashed aircraft were a common occurrence. However, when Captain John Cantopher and his men from the London Irish Rifles arrive at the scene, they are staggered to find the Germans begin to shoot at them!

A short firefight took place before the German aircrew were captured. The reason for their fight could be put down to their desire to protect a top secret piece of equipment onboard their JU88 Bomber.

Captain Cantopher and his men gave their German prisoners a typically English welcome by taking them to the nearby pub for a pint of beer!

The Battle of Graveney Marsh remains to this day, the last time a foreign military force fired their weapons in Great Britain.
