Hi Folks,

Some argue separation of church (religion) and state ala Western is a cure for religious fuelled violence and friction in Indonesia or at least government should remove religion field on Identification card but I would say it's not going to happen. You wouldn't ask Americans to remove their 2nd amendment or Aussies to give up their Vegemite.

Religions have been part of Indonesia heritage and will always be in the future. Yes, certainly there are Atheist Indonesians but that beside the point. Most Indonesians I know presume religion as integral part of their life and carry it with pride.

I am not going to comment whether religion is inherently good or bad, I'll leave it to each individual to make up their own mind. The only certainty is weaponising religion to score political gain is T O X I C and extremist factions DO exist and threaten to undermine the very fabric that make Indonesia diversely beautiful.

It's my hope that Indonesia will stay Indonesia, elected officials govern for ALL Indonesians regardless of their background, intolerance and discrimination being called out.
