The Kalama Sutta is a discourse by the Buddha that is often cited as the Buddha's "charter of free inquiry". It's also known as the Kesamutti Sutta.
Overview
The Kalama Sutta is part of the Aṅguttara Nikaya of the Tipiṭaka.
It's famous for encouraging free thinking and opposing dogmatism, fanaticism, and intolerance.
It sets forth principles that should be followed by a seeker of truth.
It contains a standard things are judged by.
It expounds the idea that in order to gain clarity one has to also examine one's mind and ideas.
Background The Kalama Sutta is the Buddha's reply to the people of Kalama. The people of Kalama asked the Buddha who to believe out of all the ascetics, sages, venerables, and holy ones who passed through their town. They complained that they were confused by the many contradictions they discovered in what they heard.
The Kalama Sutta says, "Do not go upon what has been acquired by repeated hearing; nor upon tradition; nor upon rumor; nor upon what is in a scripture; nor upon surmise; nor upon an axiom; nor upon specious reasoning; nor upon a bias toward a notion that has been pondered over; nor upon another's seeming ability; nor upon the consideration, 'This contemplative is our teacher'".
