Chess endgames are hard. And in order to understand the full complexity of practical endgames, there are a handful of theoretical endgames we have to master first. That's especially true for rook endgames. There are basic positions like the Lucena or the Philidor without which navigating endgames in practical play is very difficult and you're likely to blunder away your advantage or lose a draw position if you aren't familiar with them.
