In this video we are going to look at 5 mistakes to avoid when you are buying a luxury watch, this could be your fist luxury watch or this could be your tenth. Everyone is guilty of making some of these mistakes in their watch buying career including me, but we are going to outline them here so that you are well equipped and aware of the mistakes to avoid when buying your new luxury timepiece. Before we start just a quick intro about me and what qualifies me to create a video like this, my name is Lee Scott I am the founder of Vulcan Watch Straps, I have been a watch collector since my early 20s and have owned many luxury timepieces from many of the luxury brands you see today, my first watch was a Tag Heuer Indy 500 and one of the most expensive watches I ever purchased was a £15,000 AP Royal Oak offshore and I have owned everything in between that from Breitling to Omega, Bell & Ross to Panerai and Tudor to Rolex.

So I feel like I have a good understanding of the watch buying process. So that said I have come up with a list of mistakes to avoid when you are looking to buy your next watch.
Let’s get into the reason you are all here for and look at mistake number 1 to avoid when buying a new luxury watch.

Mistake 1

Not buying from a non-reputable dealer / buying from ebay / online seller.

I have heard so many horror stories of people buying luxury watches mainly Rolex from sites such as ebay, and even doing the double no-no which is buying a Rolex from ebay from overseas, and if you wanted the triple whammy buying a Rolex from Ebay, from overseas, from China!

Mistake 2

Buying a watch that irritates you

You really need to try a watch on for a while to see if its comfortable before you buy it. Don’t forget in most cases you will be wearing this watch pretty regular so you want to feel comfortable. Another tip for you, when you try it on in the store rotate your arm and make sure the strap doesn’t trap the hairs in your arm, it’s a pain when you get a strap which does this. The most comfortable strap I have worn is the Omega Sea-master planet ocean, that strap feels like silk on your arm.

Mistake 3

Buying a brand just because it’s currently “fashionable”

So one minute a brand is hot the next minute it’s not, that the way of the fashion industry but there are some brands which will never go out of fashion brands such as Rolex, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, Patek Phillipe. These brands will always be fashionable so they are a safe buy, but they have the price tag to match. If you are spending money on a luxury watch you really need to look into watches and brands which have stood the test of time.

Mistake 4

Buying abroad when on holidays then getting stung with import tax

Here is one to really pay attention to, and that is buying a luxury watch outside of your home country and bringing back home. So you see a beautiful Rolex Submariner on your holidays and wait its cheaper than in the Uk, a lot cheaper, I have got to buy this. So you are all smug and loving your new timepiece. You keep the box and papers in your luggage and pass through the nothing to declare lane at Heathrow airport.

Mistake 5

Buying a watch as an “investment”

Guys, please don’t buy a watch purely for investment, if you want to do this you need to be in the know buying vintage models or in the 5 figure category buying a Patek which you leave in your safe for the next 20 years. Watches are meant to be enjoyed.

Bonus Mistake

Buying the wrong watch for you lifestyle

Now this is one which most people don’t really take into account when they are buying a luxury watch. You really need to buy a watch which suits your lifestyle and think about your lifestyle and how and when you are going to be wearing your watch to get the most out of it. For example if you don’t attend many formal events and work in a dirty factory 7 days a week, you aren’t really going to get the most out of a Solid gold Rolex Day Date.
