One reason STM32 microcontrollers stand out is because we try to make devices that are truly energy-efficient. Take an ultra-low power microcontroller. The key is not only its power consumption but what it can do while consuming as little energy as possible. It’s the only way for developers to innovate and create sustainable products.

That’s why we are so thrilled to announce the STM32U0, our newest ultra-low power microcontroller. ST featured it in a demo at CES 2024. It showcased a battery-less thermometer and illuminometer powered by a small photovoltaic panel receiving only 5 lux. Here the STM32U0 allowed engineers to get rid of the battery.

Why? The reason is simple. The new device features a static low power consumption of only 230 nA in standby mode with RTC and 16 nA in shutdown. As products like these spend most of their time in a sleep state until they briefly wake up, such a low power consumption gives developers the freedom to provide significant optimizations, enabling them to use original power sources.

Here’s a real-world example. By moving to the STM32U0, a team working on a smart water metering application was able to reduce their energy consumption by 50%. Now, these engineers have the freedom to design products with greater features while still enjoying important energy savings.

To make the STM32U0 even more resourceful, ST included lots of peripherals. In fact, there are a lot more of them than what you traditionally see on a device competing at the same price point and power consumption. For instance, we have an LCD segment display controller, a 12-bit ADC, a DAC, 2 ultra-low power comparators, an op amp, and more!

Ultimately, the STM32U0 is driven by a simple idea: bringing you the optimal combination of energy consumption, features and cost. It means reducing the power consumption while increasing available features to improve the cost-effectiveness of the entire solution. That’s why the STM32U0 is perfect for entry-level applications. That’s what we thought of when we made it pin-to-pin compatible with many STM32Ls MCUs. That’s how ST helps save energy and create a more sustainable world where batteries have a longer lifetime and products have a longer life cycle.

And now, let’s talk to ASCOEL, an ST customer in Italy, and see how they use the STM32U0.
