Threats directed toward government officials have been on the rise, prompting one Winnipeg city councillor to hire private security to attend a recent community event.

Coun. Janice Lukes hosted a Tea and Talking gathering at Chai Mehfil last Thursday, and there were two members of a security detail on hand after hearing rumblings of a protest about Winnipeg Transit.

“I just felt for the safety of the people coming to my community consultation, for the safety of the tea house and for my staff that maybe I should just have a couple security people there,” Lukes told CBC on Monday.
