Trumpeter/hornist Jeff Stockham recently came to the Making Music offices for what turned out to be a rather lengthy interview about his passion for historic brass instruments — both playing them and collecting them. One of the many ensembles in which Stockham plays, in fact, is The Excelsior Cornet Band, New York State’s only authentic Civil War brass band.

Stockham has played across the globe and backed up numerous national artists. His experience and skill as a multi-instrumentalist and session musician has made him a mainstay in Central New York’s recording studios. His trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, and French horn playing can be heard on a long list of recordings by regional artists, including a number of award-winning CDs. Jeff is also one of the few musicians worldwide to play jazz on French horn.

During our interview, Stockham discussed his experience working in Steven Speilberg’s film "Lincoln", in which Stockham portrayed a member of a military band playing at a flag-raising event overseen by President Lincoln.
