Manufacturing sectors and technology industries are experiencing a shortage of employees with the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to operate and maintain new systems-based technology. The MAT² program is an educational model developed in conjunction with global technology leaders to combine theory, practice and work to train a globally competitive workforce. The inspiration for the MAT² program stemmed from Governor Snyder's travels to Germany back in 2012 or 2013, and while he was over in Germany he was able to observe first hand the German dual-education system. The principles behind the German dual-education system is that students simply learn by doing, and that's something that he wanted to incorporate over here in partnership with employers and community colleges to be able to offer a program where students would alternate between classroom training and on the job training, gaining the high-tech skills they need to succeed in their careers.
