On June 11, 2022, Dauphin County’s Parks & Recreation director prohibited Kevin Gaughen and Dave Kocur from collecting ballot nomination signatures in a public park. The department’s actions are a clear violation of the pair’s First Amendment right to political speech.

“Dauphin County is my county,” said Dave Kocur. “I live and work here. Going back to Thomas Jefferson, our traditions hold that governments exist to secure the rights of the people. That Dauphin County did exactly the opposite disappoints and disturbs me.” FIRE is suing to defend the right of Americans to exercise their political speech in public parks.
