When we find the definite integral we actually find the area bounded between the curve and the x axis. If the area if above the x axis the value of the integral will be positive however if the area is below the x axis we will get a negative value. This negative value must be interpreted as a positive value since area has to be positive.
Also we want to note that the negative value is only indicating that the x axis is about the curve.
