1927年，李叔同的弟子丰子恺亲自抄录歌词，并绘画插图，将它收录在《中文名歌五十曲》，1958年又把它编入《李叔同歌曲集》中.

中文原文：

长亭外，古道边，芳草碧连天。
晚风拂柳笛声残，夕阳山外山。
天之涯，地之角，知交半零落。
一瓢浊酒尽余欢，今宵别梦寒。

19世纪，美国作曲家约翰·庞德·奥特威创作了歌曲《梦见家和母亲》，这首歌流传到日本后，日本词作者犬童球溪采用《梦见家和母亲》的旋律填写了一首名为《旅愁》的歌词 。李叔同于1905年至1910年东渡日本留学，学习油画兼修音乐戏剧。此间他接触到了犬童球溪的《旅愁》，将歌词作了翻译。

“西风起，秋渐深，秋容动客心。独身惆怅叹飘零，寒光照孤影。
忆故土，思故人，高堂会双亲。乡路迢迢何处寻，觉来梦断心。”

1915年，回国后的一个冬天，大雪纷飞，旧上海是一片凄凉。李叔同与好友许幻园挥泪而别，却连好友的家门也没迈进。李叔同看着昔日好友远去的背影，在雪地里站了整整一个小时，连叶子小姐多次的叫声，也没听见。随后，李叔同返身回到屋内，把门一关，让叶子小姐弹琴，他含泪写下了《送别》。李叔同对原曲作了少量的修改，又配上新的歌词。
