Effingham County voters will be asked to approve a six-year extension of the current special purpose local option sales tax, or SPLOST, on the November 2nd county-wide ballot. Before you go to the polls, here’s what you need to know.
A SPLOST is an optional one percent sales tax used to fund capital projects proposed by the county and the cities of Rincon, Springfield and Guyton.
SPLOST proceeds can only be used to fund big-ticket capital projects, like buildings, parks, roads, major equipment and vehicles, and cannot be used for maintenance and operation costs.
This is not a new tax. The ballot question will authorize renewal of the current SPLOST, which is set to expire next year. The SPLOST law was enacted by the Georgia legislature in 1985, and has been an important funding source for public safety and quality-of-life projects for a generation.
Prior SPLOST -funded projects in Effingham include the Clarence Morgan Sports Complex and Gymnasium, the Sheriff’s offices and County Jail expansion, improvements at Macomber and McCall parks, Effingham Parkway, and countless local roads, police and fire vehicles, ambulances and public works equipment. The renewed SPLOST will fund similar projects.
