STORYLINE:

Protesters clashed with riot police in South Korea on Thursday as thousands of Korean farmers staged a rally against the opening of the nation's rice market to foreign competition.

Farmers also called for the legal protection of non-regular workers.

Last year, South Korea agreed to increase its rice import quota to 7.96 percent of its total domestic consumption from the current 4 percent.

In return, it was also allowed to delay the opening of its rice market by 10 more years until 2014.

Tension has been mounting here after a farming activist died recently after clashing with riot police two weeks ago.

Farmers claim Jeon Yong-cheol died of brain injuries sustained in a clash with police and demanded an official investigation into the death.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting daily against the further opening of the Korean rice market.
