Andhra style MAMIDIKAYA PAPPU | MAMIDIKAYA PAPPU in Pressure Cooker | మామిడికాయ పప్పు

Mango Dal is a delightful and tangy Indian dish that combines the rich, earthy flavors of lentils with the tart, fruity essence of raw mangoes. This unique culinary creation is particularly popular in South Indian and Bengali cuisines, where the balance of sour and savory elements is celebrated.

Ingredients:

• For the Dal:

o 1 cup Toor dal (pigeon peas) or Moong dal (yellow lentils)
o 1 raw mango, peeled and chopped
o 1 green chili, slit
o 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
o Salt to taste
o 3 cups water

• For the Tempering (Tadka):

o 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
o 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
o 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
o 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds (optional)
o 2 dried red chilies
o 1 sprig curry leaves
o 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
o 2-3 garlic cloves, crushed

Instructions:

Cook the Dal:
1. Wash the toor dal (or moong dal) thoroughly and soak it in water for about 30 minutes. Drain the water.
2. In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, chopped raw mango, slit green chili and turmeric powder
3. Add 3 cups of water and mix well.
4. Close the lid of the pressure cooker and cook on medium heat for 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and fully cooked.
5. Once the pressure releases naturally, open the lid and mash the dal slightly with a spoon or ladle to combine the ingredients well.

Prepare the Tempering (Tadka):

1. Heat oil or ghee in a small pan over medium heat.
2. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
3. Add cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds (if using) and let them sizzle.
4. Add crushed garlic and dried red chilies, curry leaves, and asafoetida.
5. Sauté until the all turn to golden color.

Combine and Simmer:
1. Pour the prepared tempering over the cooked dal and mix well.
2. Let the dal simmer for another 5-10 minutes on low heat, allowing the flavors to meld together.
3. Adjust the salt and consistency of the dal by adding more water if needed.

Garnish and Serve:
1. Garnish the mango dal with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
2. Serve hot with steamed rice, roti, or any Indian bread of your choice.
