Occasionally Lake Superior Agates will be coated with a thick crusty layer of Calcium Carbonate when you find them. Don't worry! There is a quick and easy way to remove this eye sore from your rocks! A CLR bath.

Calcium carbonate is an extremely common mineral (CaCO3). Calcite, Limestone, and the imescale that is on your faucet or shower head are all composed of Calcium Carbonate. It is the result of calcium dissolving into water (Ca+), where it is then precipitated out upon surfaces as as the water evaporates. At some point during your agates "lifespan" it has come into contact with water that was rich in dissolved ions of (Ca+). As the water slowly evaporated, a thick layer of calcium carbonate formed on the surface of your stone, cementing some of the surrounding sediments to your rock. CLR can be used to dissolve this material without harming your Lake Superior Agate.

CLR is a common household product that can be found at any home improvement store.
Please read the warning label before use.

STEP 1) Find a container.
STEP 2) Place Agate into container.
STEP 3) Pour in CLR until the Agate is completely submerged.
STEP 4) Wait 20-60 mins. Keep an eye on it, times may vary.
STEP 5) Once done, dilute with water by slowly adding water to the cup and pouring it out. Do this until the green CLR is gone and your water in now clear.
STEP 6) Remove and inspect.
