Recognizing Murdered, Missing, Indigenous Women and Girls on National Native American Heritage Day

As our country recognizes today as National Native American Heritage Day, we’d like to take a moment to address a critical issue facing our Native communities. According to Federal statistics, hundreds of Indigenous women are murdered and go missing, oftentimes, without effective reporting by law enforcement or prosecution of perpetrators.

In 2017, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls; shockingly, the US Department of Justice’s federal missing persons database only logged 116 cases. Today, not only do we honor Indian Country, but we also honor the lives of our sisters…who were taken too soon.
