In this animated imagining a young Hans Christian Andersen, while seeking an opera ticket, encounters a young girl selling matches and a spoiled girl who inherits some magical red shoes. Sound familiar? Indeed it should, for through his adventures in the city Hans discovers the inspirations and talents he will later use for his fairy tales... with the help a mysterious stranger who calls himself Uncle Oley.

This is a Japanese release that was later redubbed in English and re-released in the USA. It was broadcast on television in the mid to late 1970's, which is how it's most often remembered here in the states.
