MARC-ANDRE FLEURY - FULL TRAINING SESSION - Goalie drills, team training and penalty shots

Marc-André Fleury full training session at the first day of Minnesota Wild 2023 training camp.

This video includes goalie training session with couple of drills before the team practice. Team practice with flow drills and 3 puck penalty shot competition to finish of the ice session.

I think the biggest thing you can pick from this is that ”you play like you train”. You’ll notice the creativity that comes only from doing it at practices and also how it looks like he is having fun. Kind of like he’d be playing street hockey with friends.

Side note: one of the key things for a long career is how can you keep it fun and enjoy going to the rink most of the time because at some point even hockey is going to feel like any other job ”a job”. Emotion management becomes one of the hardest things to do when you constantly have to perform at your highest level. If you are a pro you know what I’m talking about or if you have been in high competition environments.

When you look at Fleury you can see things that our generation of goalies learned when growing up and what would be now considered ”old school”. There are still hints of that to be seen even he plays as any other modern goalie.

When looking at his technique pick a one thing you focus on. For example, what only skates and the movement. That will help you to see details.

One very important thing to understand and why I think this video is also great to watch for young goalies is that there are still plenty of mistakes even we are looking at one of the best goalies of all times. We still work on the same things wheter we are 15 or 35. Focus of drills is just a little different and how we do them.

Fleury is naturally talented and I have seen him at U20 championships being clearly at different level. But without hard and smart work talent gets you only so far.

WHAT TO PICK FROM THIS VIDEO:

- Let your personality to reflect in your style because that way you will enjoy playing more.

- At practices don’t be afraid of trying different things.

- Not every shot has to be or even can be taken with 100% effort but you can still have 100% focus. It is called energy management. Older you get better you become at it because you will know yourself better.

- When watching Fleury you can see a goalie who has incorporated some of the ”old school” techniques to modern style.

- For young goalies the single biggest thing I’d say to pick from this practice video: Active butterfly style. Meaning that even when being compact there is never lock and wait, instead constant flow and ready to react.
