Sepupz, this one is going to sting a little. University of Malaya is the pride of Malaysia, a symbol of national achievement, the alma mater of prime ministers and cabinet ministers, and a dream for thousands of STPM, matriculation, and asasi students. But is UM truly the pinnacle, or is it just a reputation we’ve let grow bigger than the reality on the ground? In this video, I take a hard look at whether UM is overrated, and why that matters for students making the biggest decision of their lives.

We’ll explore the myths and realities of Malaysia’s top-ranked university. From the Chancellor’s prestige and Dewan Tengku Chancellor’s iconic status, to the limits of its accounting intake and its aging facilities, the picture is more complicated than glossy brochures suggest. Along the way, I compare UM to global institutions—Harvard, Cambridge, NUS, and beyond—while asking whether subsidized tuition is worth more than a full scholarship abroad. For many, UM is the dream. But dreams should be tested against reality.

At the end of the day, education is about opportunity, not just rankings. Whether it’s a scholarship to the US, UK, or Singapore, or a strong experience at Sunway, Taylor’s, or another private college, students have far more choices than they think. UM has shaped generations of Malaysians, but it doesn’t have to be the hill anyone dies on. If you’re weighing your own university path, this video is for you. Let’s talk honestly about what’s at stake, and why broadening your horizons might change your life forever.
