In this tutorial I show you the simple Apache commands you need to block and blacklist IPs that are abusing you or your website. This includes block mean people and block malicious bots / spiders.

This can also include block hackers and block hack attempts if you have know their IPs and this method is also used for blocking spam.

The .htaccess file is very powerful and with a few simple additions it can help you harden your WordPress site or any website running on an Apache server.

The Apache command that you can copy and paste from above needs to go into the .htaccess that is in the root of your website, so let's go there.

First login into your hosting account cPanel. Then find and click on the File Manager icon and choose the Document Root for the website that you are hardening. This will open the root of the website in another tab.

You can also log into the website root using FTP if you are more comfortable with that.

If you do not see a .htaccess in the website right then you can make one by clicking Add New File in the File Manager or right-clicking and choosing Create New File via FTP.

Open the .htaccess file and paste the code from above into it. Then all you have to id replace the dummy IP with an actual IP address.

You can block as many unique IP address as you like by duplicating this command and inserting the new IP each time:

deny from 123.456.789.111

That's all there is to blocking and blacklisting IPs via .htaccess on an Apache server and in WordPress.
