Today’s presentation highlights the Generation of a Handmade Silk Cocoon Dream Catcher from cut and pierced mulberry silk cocoons, developed for interior home decoration by a Fashion Technology student, Mr. Prakash of Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (BIT), Sathyamangalam, under my academic guidance. This creative initiative demonstrates how natural silk by-products can be transformed into aesthetically appealing, value-added décor products through thoughtful design and craftsmanship.
Mulberry silk cocoons possess unique characteristics such as lightweight structure, natural translucency, organic texture, and biodegradability. In this project, discarded and surplus cocoons are cut, pierced, shaped, and carefully assembled to form a handmade dream catcher that reflects elegance, craftsmanship, and sustainability. The process emphasizes material understanding, surface aesthetics, and structural balance while preserving the natural beauty of silk.
This student-led innovation strongly aligns with the principles of sustainable design, waste utilization, and circular economy, converting low-value silk waste into high-value lifestyle products. Handmade silk cocoon dream catchers have significant potential in eco-friendly home décor, boutique interiors, artisan markets, and sustainable retail segments, both domestically and internationally.
From an educational perspective, the project provides hands-on exposure to product development, creative experimentation, sustainability-driven thinking, and market-oriented design, extending fashion technology learning beyond conventional apparel. It also highlights the role of academic mentorship in nurturing innovation and responsible material usage among students.
