THANG

This place that you are seeing wasn’t open to tourists until 2018. But as usual, we had special privileges. We experienced this place first hand before any tourist got here. Since then, this village is always included in our itinerary for all our Ladakh tours.
The northernmost village of india.
Are you thinking about turtuk? Then you are wrong. There are three more villages north of turtuk. Tyakshi, Pachathang and Thang.
These three villages along with turtuk and bogdang, were in pakistan’s possession till 1971. So, the villagers here were literally Pakistanis till 1971 and after that they became Indians. You should hear how they celebrated their liberation day!
Apricots orchids are plenty here. But that won’t mesmerize you. It is the stories the locals tell that are intriguing.
This section was closed for tourists till 2017. And, The locals filed petition after petition to open these places for tourists. And we are glad they did. In 2018, tourist permits were issued for visits till Thang village. If you have already visited Ladakh and have missed these places, don’t worry. The relaxation is expected to prevail, now that we have a separate Union Territory of Ladakh. Hurray!
Thang, the northernmost village of India in this part of the siachen sector, is only 2 kms away from the nearest Pakistan’s village.
Even google maps started mentioning these places only from 2019. Imagine how remote this place is!
For information purposes, there are three major sectors in siachen region. And these villages fall on the third sector. This sector does not experience shelling and other intrusion activities from the other side. A calm border with Pakistan. Wait a minute, that sounded like an oxymoron.

During our first visit, We were not allowed to take our bikes in, so, we hiked the barren land across the distantly located villages.
We had a local helping us. He fed us and shared stories of the village.
Yea. You heard that right! TN vehicles. We were far from home.
Don’t miss out the village walks in Turtuk and Tyakshi. And ride to Nubra Valley. Not for that stupid khardung la, but for the beautiful Baltistan.
