The Grotto, officially known as the National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, is a 62-acre Catholic shrine and botanical garden located in Portland, Oregon. Established in 1924 by Friar Ambrose Mayer, it serves as a place of solitude, peace, and prayer for visitors of all faiths.

Lower Level (Free Admission):

The Grotto Cave: A man-made cave carved into a basalt cliff, featuring a life-size replica of Michelangelo’s Pietà.

Chapel of Mary: Built in 1955, this chapel hosts daily Mass and provides space for indoor ceremonies.

Stations of the Cross Trail: A paved loop through a forested area, with bronze plaques depicting the story of the crucifixion.

Gift Shop and Visitor Center: Offering religious items, books, and souvenirs.


Upper Level (Admission Fee Required):

Meditation Chapel: Completed in 1991, this contemporary chapel features a glass wall offering panoramic views of the Columbia River Valley and the Cascade Mountains.

Peace Gardens: Serene paths lined with trees and flowers, surrounding small ponds, providing a tranquil environment for reflection.

International Shrines and St. Anne’s Chapel: Showcasing various cultural representations of Catholic traditions.
