UPHILL BEACH, BOATYARD/MARINA & NATURE RESERVE

Uphill beach is at the southern end of Weston-super-Mare. You could maybe describe it as WSM's wild cousin, it's a world away from the amusement arcades and candyfloss you'll find in WSM itself. The beach is quite similar to Brean beach which sits on the far side of Brean Down headland on the other side of the River Axe which flows out to sea here. It's dog friendly, has some lovely dunes and super soft sand. Great for kids and sand castle building but not for swimming. You can park on the beach itself (tides dependant) for £10 for all day, or you can park at Uphill Marina for free. This is what we did as we wanted to visit the nature reserve and have a look around the boatyard.

At the Marina there is a lovely cafe – Uphill Wharf Cafe-Bar with toilets available, and more importantly ice cream!!! We entered the Uphill Nature Reserve here, passing the lime kiln and entrance to the campsite. You can explore the reserve and also go into the neighbouring Walborough Nature Reserve. The trails are buggy/bike friendly and will take you all the way to Brean if you want but we decided to climb the hill up to the tower, a former windmill which you can go up for panoramic views of the area - well worth it! Then we went across to St. Nicholas's Church, a Norman Church dating back to the 12th century (though there is evidence to suggest a Saxon Church stood there prior also). It's a beautiful little church, we went in and there was a warden there who gave us lots of history about it.

From the church we made our way down the other side of the hill and circled back to the boatyard for a look at the boats and the small lake at the campsite before heading to the beach, past Slimeridge farm where we saw donkeys, sheep and alpacas!

You can follow the beach around to the mouth of the River Axe and you will come across the flat salt marshes with Uphill Hill Nature Reserve rising up in the background. We didn't get around to doing this today as the kids were having so much fun playing in the sand but it's definitely on our list for when we return as I hear the views are well worth it!
