The US Congress has approved an 11th-hour deal which ends a partial government shutdown and avoids a government debt default.

But it is only a temporary respite as the agreement only extends the federal borrowing limits until February 7 and funds the government to January 15.

Speaking after the vote in the Senate, President Barack Obama said: "Once this agreement arrives on my desk I will sign it immediately - we will begin reopening our government immediately and we can begin to lift this cloud of uncertainty and unease from our businesses and from the American people.
Hopefully next time it wont be in the eleventh hour, one of the things Ive said throughout this process is we have gotta get out of the habit of governing by crisis."

After weeks of arguing between Democrats and Republicans, a last minute deal forged by Senate leaders was presented to both chambers.

There had been warnings of global economic consequences unless an agreement to raise the government's borrowing limit were reached.
