The Tripura Pradesh Unorganised Workers’ Congress organised a protest programme opposing the decision of the Modi Government to remove Mahatma Gandhi’s identity from the MGNREGA scheme.

The Congress alleged that by erasing Gandhi’s name from the rural employment programme, the government has attacked both Gandhi’s legacy and the rights of workers. Protesters said MGNREGA is closely associated with Gandhian ideals of dignity of labour and social justice, and any move to dilute this identity undermines the interests of rural and unorganised workers.

The demonstration highlighted growing resentment among workers and demanded the restoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s name and spirit within the scheme.
