After a 37-year career as a lawyer, judge, and legal educator, including serving as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, Senator Murray Sinclair was appointed to the Senate in April 2016, representing Manitoba until his retirement in 2021.

Known for his public speaking skills, he advocates against racism and discrimination while championing justice for Indigenous peoples and reconciliation efforts in Canada, which have been affected by 150 years of colonialism.

In addition to his advocacy work, Senator Sinclair serves as a mediator and consultant on legal history, Indigenous cultures, and public policy. He has received 14 honorary degrees, along with national awards for justice and lifetime achievement from the Inspire Awards, as well as international recognition for his contributions to human rights and justice.
