The World Chess Championships is ongoing in New York with Russia's Sergey Karjakin taking on defending champion Magnus Carlsen.

Historically, the sport was dominated by players from the former USSR. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the number of competitive players declined. But the game is starting to make a comeback.
