Once upon a time our land was a successful almond plantation, producing 75 tonnes of almonds each year. During this time the land was sprayed with pesticides and herbicides, meaning over time the soil has lost its vigour for life and the land has almost been reduced to desertification. The yearly rains are washing away the top soil and destroying many of our stone terraces. We want to turn this 14 acre abandoned land into a luscious forest, and bring life back to the top of this mountain. For the past 3 years we’ve been planting trees, creating a huge vegetable garden and irrigating the land with water from our spring, and slowly we’re starting to see the wildlife return. As a bi-product of creating this luscious forest, we’ll be able to support our family by harvesting fruits, berries, vegetables and meat.

Our new compost design will play a key role in accelerating our mission by saving the 75,000 litres of water that a 3 person household uses each year with a conventional toilet and producing 630kg of high quality compost each year for our trees.

We’ve refined our compost toilet design from watching thousands of youtube videos and hundreds of sketches, so we hope it’s as awesome as we’re anticipating… and hopefully last us a lifetime.

Our story:
We are Emilia, Robbie & Sage, we left our city lives behind and moved to the top of a mountain in Spain, to live off-grid. We’ve spent two years alone, renovating an old stone house and restoring the abandoned land. Join us as we continue to build our off-grid homestead, and become self-sufficient from the land.
