Описание к видео Jack Payne & His BBC Orch. - My Baby Just Cares For Me, 1930

Jack Payne & His BBC Dance Orchestra – My Baby Just Cares For Me, Fox-Trot from „Whoopee” (Kahn & Donaldson) with Vocal Trio, Columbia 1930 (UK)

NOTE: Jack PAYNE is one of the big names of the Golden Era of British Big Bands (late 1920s to 1930s), including such bandleaders as Jack Hylton, Lew Stone, Harry Roy, Bert Ambrose, Jack Jackson, Billy Cotton, Carroll Gibbons and dozens of others. Born in 1899 in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, Jack Payne was interested in flying and joined the Officer Training Corps school. In the army, he was involved in playing piano in amateur bands for the army and for wounded soldiers in the Birmingham area. After WW1, Payne played with American jazz bands at the Birmingham "Palais" before moving to London in 1925. He led a ten-piece band that became the main band at London's prestigious Cecil Hotel. His orchestra performed regularly at the BBC, and in 1928 Payne became director of BBC dance music and leader of the BBC's first official dance band. He left the BBC in 1932, when he was replaced by Henry Hall. Jack Payne went on a nationwide tour, and also toured Europe and South Africa until the outbreak of World War II. In 1939, Payne returned to the BBC, remaining there until 1946. In the 1950s, he became a disc jockey on radio and television shows. In 1955, he started his own BBC TV program Words and Music, and also appeared in films. In retirement, he managed a hotel in Sussex. He died in 1969 in Tonbridge, Kent County.
