There has been much debate on whether gravely sick people should be allowed to end their suffering voluntarily,... but from Monday, terminally ill patients in Korea will have the right to refuse certain medical treatment... as a new law on end-of-life care begins its trial period.

Patients in Korea now have the right to 'die with dignity'.
13 hospitals across Korea are beginning a trial run of end-of-life care on Monday, three months before the law comes fully into effect in February 2018, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

During the trial period, hospitals will consult with terminally ill patients or their family members about end-of-life care,... as well as determine how they treat patients who choose to 'die with dignity'.

The new law, passed by the National Assembly in January last year,...
allows patients with terminal illnesses to seek their right to die when the doctor in charge and another specialist come to the conclusion that the patient has no chance of recovery.
Instead of enduring a long and painful end to their life, they can choose to deny certain medical treatment, such as CPR, anti-cancer drugs, or respirators.
However, they cannot refuse treatment for pain-relief or supply of nutrition, oxygen, and water.

From Monday, if patients wish to seek the right to die, they must make it clear through a document that they do not want further treatment.
If patients are incapable of making the decision,... they must receive statements from two family members who are in agreement with the patient's wishes. And once the law comes fully into effect in February, the decision can be made if there is joint consent from all family members.
