Every year in the month of Bhadrapad, the festival of Hill Jatra is celebrated in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Known as Lakhe in Nepal, this powerful figure is celebrated across Kathmandu and the Newar community during Indra Jatra.

Legends trace the origins of Lakhiya to nearly 500 years ago, when the brave warrior Meher Bhai brought the mask of Lakhe from Nepal to Pithoragarh. Since then, it has become a central part of Hill Jatra. But who really is Lakhiya? A demon, a divine protector, a fierce companion of Lord Shiva, or even the guardian of Goddess Bhawani?

हर साल भाद्रपद के महीने में, उत्तराखंड के पिथौरागढ़ में मनाया जाता है हिल जात्रा। इस त्योहार का सबसे बड़ा आकर्षण होता है कुमौड़ गांव का लखिया भूत, जिसे नेपाल में लाखे के नाम से जाना जाता है।

कहानी के अनुसार, लगभग 500 साल पहले पिथौरागढ़ के वीर मेहर भाई नेपाल से लाखे का मुखौटा लेकर आए थे। तभी से यह परंपरा यहां जीवित है। लेकिन असली प्रश्न यह है – आखिर कौन है लखिया? एक भयानक भूत, शिव के गण वीरभद्र, देवी भवानी का रक्षक या एक शक्तिशाली देवता?
