Hurricane Melissa made landfall in eastern Cuba early Wednesday, just hours after wreaking havoc across Jamaica, where it became the strongest storm ever recorded in the island’s history. With winds up to 120 mph (195 kph), the Category 3 hurricane battered Cuba’s Santiago de Cuba province, flooding streets, toppling trees, and knocking out power lines. Local officials confirmed four-meter waves along the southern coast and heavy flooding across the city. Cuban authorities said over 735,000 people were evacuated before landfall, with President Miguel Díaz-Canel warning of “significant damage.” The storm had earlier hit Jamaica with Category 5 intensity, leaving behind a trail of destruction before weakening slightly as it crossed into Cuba. Melissa is now the third most intense Caribbean hurricane on record — after Wilma (2005) and Gilbert (1988) — and is expected to bring life-threatening floods, landslides, and storm surges as it continues moving northeast.
