In Skim for macOS, multi-color highlighting allows you to apply different colors to highlight text (or mark other regions) in a PDF to distinguish types of content (key ideas, definitions, supporting details, etc.). You select the *Text Tool* (or Note tool) and highlight the desired text, then choose *Tools → Show Colors…* (or use the color panel) to pick a new color for that specific highlight.

You can also set default colors for new highlights via **Skim → Preferences → Notes**, so each new highlight starts with the chosen color. This flexibility makes it easy to colour-code your annotations in a way that supports your reading and review workflow.
