The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, hosted by Australia and New Zealand, kicked off on July 20. With Julie Ertz ’14 and Sofia Huerta ’15 securing spots on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team, Santa Clara University is one of just three schools, along with Stanford and North Carolina, with multiple players on the FIFA World Cup roster.

SCU Women’s Soccer icons can also be found on the airwaves during the 2023 FIFA World Cup. Santa Clara leads all schools with three alumnae serving as broadcasters for FOX Sports. World Cup veteran and two-time Olympic medalist Aly Wagner ’02 is lead match analyst; 2001 SCU team captain and 2003 WWC player Danielle Slaton ’02 serves as a studio and match analyst; and 2007 WWC powerhouse Leslie Osborne ’05 returns as a digital host and analyst.

Legend Brandi Chastain ’91 laid the groundwork for SCU Soccer's place on the world stage. Chastain, a two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold-medalist, has teamed up with Slaton, Osborne, and Wagner as co-founders of Bay FC, the first NWSL team in the Bay Area.
