Authorities deployed heavy machinery outside a collapsed Islamic school building in Indonesia's East Java province on Friday (October 3) as rescuers raced against time to search for nearly 60 students still trapped under the rubble.

Rescuers said the search for survivors was continuing on Friday, even though they found no signs of life on Thursday (October 2) as they called out students' names and used sensors to detect vital signs.

Late on Thursday, search and rescue agency official Nanang Sigit told Reuters that rescuers would continue evacuations without heavy machinery if signs of life were detected. If no signs were found, authorities would consult stakeholders on whether to deploy heavy equipment in the search.

By late Thursday, five had been confirmed dead and 30 people were in treatment in hospital, Indonesia's disaster officials said.

The Al Khoziny school, located in the East Java town of Sidoarjo some 480 miles east from the capital Jakarta, collapsed on Monday (September 29) when its foundations could not support ongoing construction work on the upper floors, cratering upon dozens of students who were praying and trapping them under rubble.
