Svengali is a character in the 1894 novel Trilby (she is the singer in my poem) by George du Maurier. Though not a central character, he has become more widely known than the novel itself, as the term 'Svengali' now commonly refers to a person who exercises a controlling or mesmeric influence on another, especially for a sinister purpose, usually in relation to the fields of arts and entertainment.
I strayed from the novel in some places, while preserving others. I was more interested in the term than the character. This work began as the central drawing shown, to which I added the verse because the image seemed to insist upon that! Narrator extraordinaire Michael Rhys gives just the right reading, capturing the sinister/tragic undertones of the poem.
