Indian food is a popular cuisine in Oman, so I knew I couldn’t visit the country without having some. Come with me as I have Indian fusion food in Muscat, Oman!
For this food adventure, my friends and guides Ameer and Yousef from Oman Travel and I headed over to Kumar Restaurant. They make Indian fusion food, including Indian, Afghan, and Kuwaiti dishes using Indian spices. Everything has an Indian twist.

In the kitchen, I immediately tried some crispy papadum. Then, we watched them prepare tandoori chicken, short rib biryani, butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, chicken balls, butter chicken risotto, tandoori prawns, and more. My mouth was watering just watching them cook!
They brought me and Ameer some papadum with mint and tamarind chutneys, which Ameer and I ate right in the kitchen. The mint was amazing!
Yousef and I tried the spicy tandoori prawns with mint chutney. The charcoal from the tandoor gave it a massive smoky flavor. I also loved the naan and butter chicken gravy. It was fantastic. The creamy tomato gravy blew me away!
Then, they cooked some short ribs in barbecue sauce. They also sauteed some marinated beef tenderloin strips for their Delhi Volcano Fries. Then, they fried some sweet potato fries! I also loved the look of the Hyderabadi beetroot salad with sesame balsamic dressing.
The Delhi Volcano Fries contained the sweet potato fries, marinated beef, crispy potatoes, and sauce. They looked unreal!
At our table, we started with the Hyderabadi Beetroot Salad, Delhi Volcano Fries, and Potato & Chickpea Chaat. The chaat was a large samosa topped with mint chutney, tamarind chutney, yogurt, sev, and pomegranate seeds.
The potato & chickpea chaat was crispy, crunchy, and full of spices. I loved the mix of savory and sweet. The salad contained corn, goat cheese, carrots, and arugula, as well as beetroot. The goat cheese was similar to feta, and the carrots were amazing.
The Delhi Volcano Fries were crispy and creamy, with a nice sweetness from the sweet potatoes. It was my favorite of the appetizers so far! I followed it with the Bangalore Biryani Chicken Balls and Butter Chicken Risotto.
The chicken balls contained potatoes and chicken. I loved it! The butter chicken risotto was a unique take on a dish I’ve eaten my entire life. It was unbelievable. The tiny chunks of chicken and the creamy makhani sauce blew my mind!
Next were the chili-mango tandoori chicken with parmesan and the Afghani tandoori chicken. They arrived with my banana & date lassi. The banana-date lassi was like a thick and delicious smoothie!
The Afghani tandoori chicken had a delicious smoky flavor you can only get from the tandoor. Meanwhile, the chili-mango tandoori chicken was stuffed with parmesan.
Next, they brought out the short ribs biryani, Little Tokyo chicken katsu curry, butter naan, garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, chopped chilies, achar, makhani gravy, raita.
I started with a spicy chili and the short ribs biryani. I loved the beef, mint, and the fragrant rice. The chicken tikka masala with garlic naan was nutty and flavorful. The chicken katsu curry with jasmine rice was creamy with less spices but lots of flavor.
Finally, it was time for dessert: gulab jamun with vanilla ice cream and two types of kulfi. The hot gulab jamun with cold vanilla ice cream was an amazing contrast. The pistachio kulfi was milky, creamy, and nutty. I loved the plain kulfi with caramel, cookies, burnt sugar, and peach. What a way to end our meal!
