The Tazaungdaing Lighting Festival (also called the Festival of Lights) is one of Myanmar’s most beautiful and traditional celebrations. It takes place in the Myanmar month of Tazaungmon, which usually falls in November, right after the Buddhist Lent (Vassa) ends.

🪔 Meaning of the Festival
The festival symbolizes offering light to the Buddha and spreading brightness to drive away darkness, both literally and spiritually. Lighting lamps represents wisdom, knowledge, and enlightenment, guiding people from ignorance to truth.

🎇 How the Festival is Celebrated

People light oil lamps, candles, or colorful electric bulbs around pagodas, monasteries, and homes.

In towns and villages, there are lamp-post competitions, hot-air balloon competitions, and community lighting ceremonies.

Young people carry decorated light posts along the streets while singing and celebrating.

Families also offer robes and alms to monks during this time — this is called the Kathein Robe Offering Ceremony, which happens in the same month.
