The Edo River is my backyard river; with just a three-minute-walk from my home, I'd be looking down the river from its bank. I know this river and surrounding areas quite well. My elementary school is right by there, and the riverside space was my playground. Today, this is my regular running route, bike commuting path and daily dog walking course. I literally grew up here, and still actively running around in this area. But, I have to admit that I had never imagined that I would be paddling around in the Edo River as an adult for sure. Anyway, I feel grateful about this environment.

This time, I picked a very calm day to map Google's Street View. The water was so still and glassy. I launched from the underbridge space in Higashi Kanamachi. There's a free parking for the local mini golf course. They usually wouldn't check the vehicles, but be respectful if you ever use the parking. Technically, it's for the golf course visitors. From there, the first straight section is exactly right behind of my home, and it feels so great. There are golf courses on both side of the river. They maintain their courses well, resulting the amazing view from the water. It's humble, simple and beautiful. After passing JR Joban Line Railway and Shin Katsushika Bridge, you will see two funny looking structures. Both of them are intake towers of Kanamachi Water Purification Plant. This water plant is responsible for the eastern side of the Metropolitan Tokyo with over 2.5 million people. Apparently, total 10 million people in Tokyo, Chiba and Saitama use the water from the Edo River. This could be why upper to mid section of the Edo River have less power boats and have been left untouched. I think the government is trying to put some effort to keep this river natural and clean which would be so fantastic.

Between Shibamata and Yagiri, there's a historic water taxi called Yagiri No Watashi. Cheerful boatmen will entertain the passengers while crossing the river. They allow pets, and even bicycles if they are not busy. I kept down south and made U-turn at Edogawa Sluice. You can pass this lock and keep on going if you want. If you do, eventually you will get to the Tokyo Bay, near Tokyo Disneyland and Kasai Rinkai Park. On my way back, a bit of south wind picked up and I enjoyed the down wind boost. By the time I got back to Kanamachi area, the wind stopped again, and I enjoyed the beautiful sunset from the glassy water of the Edo River.

*****

I leave some footprints on Google Street View by uploading data I captured. Most of them are from my little expeditions on and around water, such as rivers, lakes and bays. I'm also pretty big on bike touring, so some of them are from my bike trips. Current Google Street View requires 360 video footages with matching GPX data to make them appear on the Google Map. These are the actual footages I have uploaded.
