I was genuinely thrilled when I revealed this one … all that intricate, beautiful texture from such an ordinary nettle leaf 💚
Nettles are fascinating. I love them despite their infamous sting caused by a cocktail of histamine and formic acid stored in tiny, hollow hairs.
Before cotton became dominant, nettles were widely used for fabric, alongside flax and hemp woven into cloth for centuries, right up to the 1700s.
Nettles are rich in symbolism often associated with feminine resilience, healing, and quiet power. They're protective, potent, and full of contradictions: both nurturing and sharp, painful yet healing, overlooked yet essential.
In Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Wild Swans, nettles become a symbol of transformation and sacrifice, as the heroine weaves them into shirts to break a spell and save her brothers, a reminder that love and courage can endure great trials.
In Folklore they were believed to guard against “elf-shot” and malevolent forces, and a thick patch of nettles was often seen as a sign of fairy activity both a warning and a blessing.
