I like her style. I like that she swims up to me stealthily in this and other poems. I like that she is a remedial English teacher, and according to PBS, maintains "a career outside the mainstream poetry circuit"

I did not listen to her version before recording mine. Sometimes the results are very interesting, and I must say that her inflections were more appropriate than mine. Despite her poems' formal sound (often rhymed), she seems to keep to her own unique choices in line-endings. Such things are a challenge to interpret vocally, and I need to not let my own personal theories of line endings (for my own poems I mean) exert undue influence on another poet's work.

The scenes are from my neighborhood, and the building center stage about the time I say, "when silence reigned," is the Joseph Priestly Memorial Library. Shhh. . .

Still, I have become a huge fan of hers, and I enjoyed this little experiment very much.

Everything contains some
silence. Noise gets
its zest from the
small shark's-tooth-
shaped fragments
of rest angled
in it. An hour
of city holds maybe
a minute of these
remnants of a time
when silence reigned,
compact and dangerous
as a shark. Sometimes
a bit of a tail
or fin can still
be sensed in parks.
