This Jalantheeswarar Temple at Thakkolam is considered the 12th among the Devara Paadal Petra Sthalams (274 most important temples of Lord Shiva) located in Thondai country. And during ancient times, this place is referred to as Thiruvooral in Thevaram. It is believed that Saint Thirugnanasambanthar rendered his hymn at Sri Gangadhareswarar temple only.

Lord Shiva is in the form of sand (Prithvi Linga). This lingam is not touched by human hands, not even by the priests, as it is "Theendaa Thirumeni". Sacred ablution is performed only on the Aavudayar. The Shiva Linga idol appears white during the drought and turns red during the fertile period.

Arunagirinathar has revered Lord Muruga in this temple in his verses in Thiruppugazh. The 3-tiers Rajagopuram is facing the west; it was built in 1543 by Vijayanagara king Veera Prataba Sadasiva Maharayar, and the temple has two corridors.

According to Puranas, as divine cow Kamadenu worshipped here, prayers offered here bring benefits to the devotee. It is believed that Sage Samvartha, Lords Mahavishnu, Indiran, Suryan, Chandran, Yama, Saptha Kannikas, Pandavas and Savitha Sivachariyar have also worshipped the Lord of this temple to seek absolution for their sins.

Goshta has Mahavishnu in the place of Lingodbhava. The unique characteristic of this temple is that the Goshta idols of Lords Ganesh, Brahma and Mahavishnu can be seen here in a seated posture as they are believed to have sat and witnessed Thakkans prayers. And Durgai alone will be seen in standing posture. Both Vishnu and Durga have "Prayoga chakra", which tells the ancient of this temple.

At the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum, there is a beautiful sculpture of Somaskandar with Parvati.

As per the Pallava king "Aparajita Varman" inscriptions, the original complex was built by Pallavas, with later expansion from Chola, Nayakas. Once the most significant commercial city during the second century, the Greek geologist Ptolemy referred to Thakkolam as 'Takola'.
