Chachaji: My Poor Relation - Vittorio de Sica Film 1978

Описание к видео Chachaji: My Poor Relation - Vittorio de Sica Film 1978

One of the best films ever made about being old and poor. An elderly pensioner was an object of society's scorn. Italy / India. A documentary by Indian-born Ved Mehta, a New Yorker magazine writer, blind since childhood. Mehta focuses on his father's cousin, a man known as Chachaji. In Hindi the name means "respected uncle," but Chachaji is hardly respected at all. At 83 (and weighing just 89 pounds), Chachaji can't make ends meet on his meager pension, so he's forced to take his meals with the Mehta family and to work at not one but two menial jobs. A humiliating life, made no easier when relatives and shopkeepers make him the butt of jokes. But this sad-eyed man has something that helps him endure: dignity.
