The legendary and unforgettable Popeye The Sailor Man was a fictitious animated character created by Elzie Crisler Segar. In 1929 on January 17, the character was first premiered in the daily cartoon strip Thimble Theater in a King Features publication, and Popeye went on to become the comic strip's protagonist. The amusing Sailor Man has also made appearances in animated animations for both theater and television. Popeye, unlike most other cartoon characters developed from someone's imagination, was based on a real person with qualities comparable to those shown by the cartoon character. Popeye first appeared in Segar's Thimble Theater comic in its tenth year as a secondary character but, nevertheless, the one-eyed sailor rapidly went on to become the main protagonist of the comic, and Thimble Theater has become one of the publication’s most successful products throughout the 1930s. The strip, written as well as drawn by Hy Eisman, still runs in first-run sections in the Sunday edition. The daily comics feature reproductions of classic Sagendorf tales.
